Marine Canvas Training for the Do-It-Yourselfer

We love teaching people the art and craft of marine canvas and are proud to work with Skagit Valley College's "Cruisers College" group, which offers a variety of boating-related courses to make your time on the water as safe and enjoyable as possible. For more information, check out their website at cruserscollege.org.

Our current lineup of canvas-related courses will guide attendees from the basics of repairing your boat's canvas to re-upholstering your cushions and designing and fabricating covers, bimini tops, and more. What our students are saying...

Dee B. Seattle, WA

Recently I participated in a Marine Canvas boot camp instructed by Mike at the SVC Cruisers College.  The entire class was well paced and engaging with lots of practical instructional activities.  Mike was very forthcoming with his expertise when the class has questions on projects.  The instruction felt patient and down to earth which was perfect for anyone’s level of experience.

Overall the class and instruction made me feel empowered to start my own projects with confidence.  10/10 recommend Mike as an instructor!

Looking forward to more classes in the future!

This is the second class I've had with Mike as the instructor, and I can't wait for the next class he teaches!  The first class was about electrical and solar systems for boats, and the recent class was an introduction to sewing canvas for boat projects.  Mike is passionate about boating, and about sharing his extensive skills and knowledge with his students.  Everyone gets all the personal attention they need, and he takes the time to help everyone and answer their questions.  He's thorough, professional, and really knows his stuff!  Everything he teaches is valuable and informative, but the real treasures of his classes are the tricks of the trade he freely shares.  Several times through the class, experienced and long term boaters made comments like "Wish I'd learned that years ago", "That makes it so much easier",  or "So that's how it's done!"

I'm looking forward to Mike's future classes on canvas work, cushions, dodgers, boat covers, framing, or whatever else he's willing to teach.  I can't recommend his classes highly enough!  If I need work done on my boat, he's the first person I'll call.

Thank you so much for a great class this weekend.  The class filled in a lot of questions I had on Marine Canvas in general along and much more.  The hands-on part of the class was another element that was so helpful.  I am now more comfortable with the sewing machine and with canvas fabric I general.  I now have the confidence to proceed with the building of fly bridge cushions that I have been putting off.  Look forward to more class in the future.

Mike presented a mountain of great information in a way that was easy to follow and not overwhelming.  By the end of the workshop I left with many ideas and awareness of a much wider array of projects that are possible.  Though I have much to learn, the hands on portion of the workshop left me feeling confident I could pull it off.  More confident now to buy a machine and charge forward!  Thanks Mike!

Mike was very knowledgeable and gave an excellent overview of working with Sunbrella and related materials. The hands on sewing was fun and challenging. I highly recommend Mike's Course!
